Summer Reading
I have heard some of your concerns over the summer reading book. This is a 5th grade level book. If you feel your student is struggling, please contact me. Part of the Foundations and Frameworks curriculum is challenging them to think critically. This is not supposed to be easy. Your student is used to looking up words in the dictionary for reading. Your student has had to do this everyday in F&F. This book is actually one of the F&F books that we will use for a unit later in the year.
Also, please make sure that your student is doing the reading and the journaling. The main reason for this assignment is for me to assess where your student is when they enter my class. It gives me a place to start with strengths and weaknesses for each individual student. I need to see how your student processes and organizes information as it is being read. This will help me determine how they are comprehending as they read, and the strategies they are already practicing to do this. This is a critical skill for SAT testing. Please make sure that your student is doing the work.

5th Grade Summer Reading
You will be reading "The Callender Papers" by Cynthia Voigt. I suggest reading it as soon as possible so that it is out of the way for the summer!
The assignment is as follows:
Your student will need to keep a "journal" each day as they read. Each entry should include:
Date, Pages Read, Detailed Summary of Reading, Predictions, and Questions for Author.
Each Entry should be in the same order each time. An example entry would look like this.
5/4/11
Pages: 1-20
Detailed Summary would be written here.
Any Predictions would be written here.
Questions would be written here.
I suggest a regular spiral notebook for the journal.
The journal will be due on or before July 15th. NO exceptions will be made. Students who register on or after July 5th must have their journals in on or before the first day of school.
Journals should be dropped off or mailed to the school. I will check to pick them up each week at some point. You can also mail them to 8513 Cross Creek Way Bessemer 35023 to get them to me directly.
Again, let me state that if I were being given the assignment, I would go ahead and get it out of the way so that last minute work is avoided. The journals need to be neat, quality work.

Book Suggestions
If your student is looking for a fun read over the summer (after completing the summer reading requirements) I am going to recommend the "39 Clues" series. This books series is quickly becoming the most popular book series in the nation. Scholastic has also set up a website for readers to follow along with the books.
